Map & Itinerary

Lusheng festival is one of the most elaborate festivals of ethnic Miao groups in Gulong and Conganjiang, to ask for a good harvest and to offer young people the opportunity to meet their future lovers. At the Lusheng festival all the Miao people come together from different villages to celebrate this great traditional event.

Apart from the wonderful dancing and music, there are also lots of other activities, such as bull-fighting, horse-racing, basketball matches, mountain-climbing, chess-playing, etc. These activities are not only popular in Guizhou province but also in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. Hundreds of Miao boys play the Lusheng together. The Miao girls dress up in silver-decorated clothes and head ornaments, singing and dancing together to the music in a circle one after another. The festival attracts thousands upon thousands of visitors each year.
The Lusheng is a reed musical instrument with multiple bamboo pipes, each fitted with a free reed, which are fitted into a long blowing tube made of hardwood. It usually has five or six pipes of different pitches, and is thus a polyphonic instrument. The sizes of Lusheng ranging from very small to several meters in length and the performers often dance and swing the instruments from side to side while playing.
This colourful ethnic ceremony is performed to bring hope for a favourable harvest in the coming year, as well as good health. The ceremony is both exciting and full of competitions. The boys try to show their skill and wisdom to win the admiration of the girls and it is a good chance for the youth to express their love toward one another.
